Cinco de Mayo, translated to the 5th of May, is a day that celebrates the state of Puebla, Mexico defeated the French army trying to take over on May 5th, 1862.
This holiday is celebrated throughout Mexico and the United States by having parties and celebrating Mexican culture.
Here are a few ways you can decorate for your own Cinco de Mayo party.
Cinco de Mayo celebrations are known for being decorated using bright colors.
Traditional colors used are white, green, and red from the Mexican flag, however you can also use bold colors such as orange, blue, hot pink, turquoise, and yellow.
Pinata
When most people think of Mexican parties, they automatically think of a pinata.
A pinata is a container that is usually made of cardboard or paper and is decorated to look like an object.
Common objects depicted in pinatas are donkeys and three dimensional stars.
The pinata is filled with candy, money, and/or small toys and people take turns hitting it with a long stick to try and break it open.
If you can't find a pinata to purchase, you can make your own.
Crepe Paper Flowers
Another item commonly found at Cinco de Mayo celebrations is crepe paper flowers.
These flowers are made from brightly colored tissue paper and can be used to decorate your table, door, trees, ceiling, stairs, mailbox, chairs, or any other stationary object.
Other Mexican Items
Other items commonly found at a Cinco de Mayo party include Mexican blankets, sombreros, cactus, cascarones (eggs shells filled with confetti), chili peppers, Mexican flags, and maracas.
Music
For a lively party, add some mariachi, marimba, or salsa music (Salsa music is sung in Spanish, however is technically Cuban, but fun and festive).
You can even hire mariachi musicians to serende people at your party.
Food and Drinks
A party is not complete without food and drinks.
For a Cinco de Mayo party, you can serve fajitas, Mexican rice, refried beans, and tortilla chips with salsa and guacamole to eat, and margaritas, Mexican beer, and Mexican sodas to drink.
You can finish off the night with a dessert of flan, sopapillas and/or churros.
