It can still be seen in old European churches and cathedrals.

If you would like to decorate your home in a gothic style, here are a few gothic decorating ideas.

Dark and Moody
Gothic design tends to be dark and moody.

You should feel almost like you are in a cave when entering a gothic room.

There are usually very high ceilings and very large windows.

Gothic rooms are dominated by dark earth tones or dark jewel tones, such as deep red and dark purple.

Dark stained wood is extremely prevalent, especially on the ceiling.

Intricate Furniture
Gothic furniture is heavy and intricate.

If made of wood, the wood is substantial in size and has detailed carving.

If there is an upholstered piece of furniture, it will be made of textural fabric (like velvet) and often has tufting.

Heavy Metal
If metal is used in gothic decorating (for furniture, lighting or accessories), it is often wrought iron or other thick and heavy metal.

Elegant
Gothic decorations tend to have an elegant feel that offsets the dark and masculine elements.

It often has velvet fabrics, crystal chandeliers, and large artwork in intricate frames.

Gothic Arch
A gothic arch is an arch that comes to a point at the top.

The gothic arch is present in gothic architecture, gothic furniture, and gothic accessories.

Reminiscent of an Old Church
Many gothic homes are reminiscent of old churches.

They utilize many wood, stone, and brick elements and have stained glass or gothic arch windows.

Accessories
When decorating in a gothic style, common accessories include old hardback books, heavy metal candlesticks, gargoyles, and large wall hung tapestries.

Gothic rooms are not overly decorated with many accessories, especially modern ones.
