If you want to your Christmas tree to look vibrant, fun, and happy (but still elegant) instead of fancy and predictable, here are a few ways to decorate a colorful Christmas tree in a professional way.
There are many different Christmas tree options available, and you don't have to use a traditional green Christmas tree.
You can use a fresh green Christmas tree, a fresh flocked Christmas tree, an artificial Christmas tree, an unusually colored Christmas tree, or whatever you find interesting.
In fact, you don't even have to use a tree at all.
You can use a wire frame or other non-tree structure as your tree.
Whatever you do use for a Christmas tree, make sure it color coordinates with the overall color scheme that you have chosen for your colorful Christmas tree.
You can use either plain white or clear lights for your Christmas tree, solid colored lights of the same color, several different solid colored lights using different colored strands, or multi colored lights.
Be aware that different brands of multi colored lights might have a slightly different hue, so either mix them up throughout your tree or try to use exactly the same light sets for your entire Christmas tree.
Use a minimum of 1 strand of 100 mini lights per foot height of tree (a 5 foot tall tree would get 5 strands of 100 count mini lights minimum).
You can add 1 or 2 strands of blinking lights wrapped around the trunk only of your Christmas tree for a slight twinkle effect.
Another fun options is to add 2 strands of slightly larger lights around your tree to add a bit of dimension.
In general, more lights = more fun. It is nearly impossible to have too many lights.
If you are using solid colored strands of lights, but a different color on each strand, don't mix the lights up around your tree. Start adding lights at the bottom of your tree with one color and work up creating a layered effect. Consider putting the strands in rainbow order - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. You don't have to have an equal amount of lights per color, but I would suggest keeping all of the like colors together.
Decide on certain colors you want for your ornaments and trimmings in your colorful Christmas tree.
You should have at least 3 colors. For best results, use vibrant, bright, and bold colors instead of pastels and neutrals.
Use multiple ornaments with the same color so the color scheme is repeated and looks intentional.
Consider using unique colors, such as teal, peacock blue, orange, navy, magenta, and chartreuse instead of primary colors of basic red, blue, and yellow.
The ornaments can be oversized to add drama and fun.
Another option is to take 3 simple ornaments, either identical or similar, and wire them together to create an ornament cluster for your Christmas tree.
You can also add items that are not ornaments for added texture, such as garlands, pine cones, floral picks, or whatever you find interesting.
Top and Bottom
Don't forget to decorate both the top and the bottom of your colorful Christmas tree.
Add a fun colorful tree topper and a colorful tree skirt to your Christmas tree.
Many people like to create their own bow using multiple different ribbons to further enforce their colorful color scheme.
You can even wrap your Christmas gifts in several different patterns of gift wrap in coordinating colors for extra designer flair.
For a unique yet color coordinated gift wrap solution, buy 3 different colors of gift wrap and 3 different colors of ribbons, then mix and match them to create different color combinations.
