Are you having a hard time finding a rug that coordinates with your decor?
Consider making your own.
Here are the step by step instructions for making a hand painted rug, also called a floor cloth.

Get a large canvas at least 6" more length and width than your final rug size.
You can find canvas at hardware stores or fabric stores.
Stretch
Stretch the canvas over a plywood or other rigid frame.
You can use clips, duct tape, or simply staple it to the frame to make it rigid.
It must be rigid so the rug will stay flat when the paint dries.
You might also be able to secure it directly to a hard floor using duct tape, but it would have to not be moved for the duration of the drying time.

Prime
Paint the canvas with a primer. Let it dry, flip it over, and prime the other side also.
Sand
Once the primer on the 2nd side has dried, you may want to sand the paint to make it totally smooth.

Paint
Paint the canvas to your liking using acrylic paint.
You can use stencils or paint free hand.
Consider using painters tape to create geometric patterns.
Varnish
Once your design is completely dry, apply 2 coats of varnish and let that totally dry per the manufacturer's instructions.

Border
Once totally dry, unfasten the canvas from the plywood and create a decorative border.
You can do this using carpet tape or use a fabric border that complements your rug.
Just folding the edges under and securing with duct tape or hot glue also works.
Tips
Make sure to use a non-slip rug pad to keep your rug in place and protect your floors below.
For cleaning, simply use a damp cloth to wipe up any spills. Avoid harsh cleaners if at all possible.
