If you are a bold person who likes to take risks when decorating, consider painting all the walls in a room black.
This all black room will be very dramatic, but you should decorate it in a way that it does not feel like a cave.
A room with all black walls can look amazing or go really wrong.
Here are some interior designer tips, tricks, & ideas for decorating a room with black walls.
White
Offset all of the black with some white.
Using white with black creates dramatic contrast in a room.
You can decorate with white bedding, white wall moldings, white mattes on framed art, white lamp shades, white upholstered furniture, or anything else that is white.
Black walls are especially popular in a bathroom since the white toilet, sink, and tub offset the black walls to create a nice contrast.
Try to use at least some crisp true white instead of only cream, beige, or ivory.
Bold Color and/or Pattern
Add a few pops of one or more bold colors to your all black room for fun, such as bold red, bright gold, deep purple, or vibrant blue.
Rooms that are mainly black can feel depressing without some vibrant visual energy.
You can also add a bold graphic pattern or two for visual interest.
The pattern can be used in art, fabric, or whatever else you desire.
The bold pattern will look extra bold against a black background.
You can use a black and white pattern or a pattern with color.
Texture
To keep your all black room from feeling dull and sterile, add items with lots of texture.
You can have a black painted brick accent wall, a sleek metallic lamp (gold looks especially good with black), and a rough wooden branch basket.
Textiles are a great way to add texture - you can use a soft velvet ottoman, silky sheets, rough burlap, and sleek leather.
Plants and flowers are great for adding texture as well as adding a bit of life to a room.
Mirrors create a shiny texture that also helps bounce light around and make the room feel less like a cave.
Lighting
Don't forget about adding lots of light sources to a black room.
The color black will seem to absorb all of the light, so you will need more light than if you had a room with lighter colored walls.
Try to use at least 2 different light sources in each of your rooms.
You can use ambient lighting, which is the general overhead lighting in the room.
Also consider using task lighting, which is lighting focused on a particular area where a task is being performed. Desk lamps, undercabinet kitchen lights, and piano lamps are good examples of task lighting.
Accent lighting highlights certain parts of a room, such as an art light over the top of a piece of art.
Decorative lighting is lighting where the light fixture itself is pretty, such as a chandelier or even light from a fireplace.
Make sure to open the window blinds and drapes to let light inside.
Tips
If all black walls scares you, consider painting just a feature wall, then decide whether to finish painting the rest of the room later.
You can also paint your walls with chalkboard paint.
