When decorating with Christmas lights on the outside of your home, stick with basic white or clear lights that do not blink or flash since Christmas lights are meant to remind us of a candle that remains lit.

Make sure that the Christmas light wire matches the item it attached to.  For example, use green wired lights for plants and white wired lights for a light colored house.

Also make sure that you are using all warm white lights (that glow a little yellow) or all cool white lights (which glow a little blue), but try not to mix the different colors together unless you do it intentionally to create a specific look.

Consider decorating with lights around your front walkway or up a tree to draw attention to the beautiful shape of its branches.

You can also decorate with candles (or lights that look like candles #ad) in the windows at the front of your home for added charm.  Solar or battery powered lanterns living the front walkway are also a nice touch.

Consider putting the Christmas tree inside your home near a front window so its lights can be seen from the outside of your home also. There is not a rule saying your are limited to one Christmas tree in your home, so feel free to decorate using multiple trees.

A simple Christmas wreath #ad on your door, hung in a window (or several windows), or suspended in the center of a large window over the door is an elegant addition to your exterior Christmas decorations.

You can use a fresh evergreen wreath that is not only beautiful but also a lovely scent, or you can use an artificial wreath which is especially nice if you are decorating several weeks in advance since it will keep its green color.

A simple wreath decoration is a large bow and maybe some battery powered string lights woven throughout.

If you prefer to decorate your wreath further, you can use Christmas ornaments, pine cones, twigs, or any other decor that complements your interior Christmas decorations.

Since the winter often leaves outside with little green, consider adding greenery (either fresh or artificial) to the outside of your home.

You can add an evergreen garland wrapped around your exterior columns or hung around your front door to add a natural texture.

Also consider adding evergreen plants in a planter or a decorated Christmas tree in your front yard.

Decorate the exterior of your home for Christmas with other natural items, such as twigs, pine cones, and fruit for classic appeal.  You can make these items more festive by spray painting them a metallic color or dipping them in glitter.

Everything in Moderation
You do not have to have the biggest or brightest Christmas decorations.
