How to Decorate Under a Christmas Tree

Most people are so concerned with decorating their Christmas tree that they forget to decorate underneath it.

You might eventually have gifts under your Christmas tree in a few weeks, but here are a few different ideas for how to decorate under your Christmas tree to give it a designer look.

Christmas Tree Skirt
The traditional item to put under a Christmas tree is a Christmas tree skirt.

A Christmas tree skirt hides the base of the tree while adding to the beauty of your Christmas decor.

Use a Christmas tree skirt that coordinates with the rest of your Christmas color scheme.

If you do not have a Christmas tree skirt, you can use whatever fabric you have available to drape around your Christmas tree stand, such as a blanket, tablecloth, or sheet.

Poinsettias
Putting potted poinsettias underneath a Christmas tree is a great way to finish off your Christmas tree decorating.

You can use red, pink, or white poinsettias - whichever works best with your Christmas color scheme.

If possible, use live plants instead of fake plastic ones (however keep them away from babies and pets since they are poisonous).

Make sure to keep your poinsettias, (and your live Christmas tree) watered to keep them looking their best.

Train
Another traditional item to decorate under a Christmas tree is a train.

Winter Village
If you have a winter village collection, consider displaying it under your Christmas tree.

The lights from your Christmas tree will illuminate it nicely.

Gifts
People traditionally put gifts underneath their Christmas tree.

This year, why not give your gifts some designer flair?

Select gift wrap that color coordinates with your Christmas tree color scheme and/or the colors of the room where the Christmas tree is located.

Avoid gift wrap with cartoon characters, words, juvenile patterns, and childish themes for a sophisticated look.

Consider purchasing 3 or more wrapping papers and 3 or more complementary ribbons and mixing & matching the papers to the ribbons for multiple different gift wrap options.

Another option is to use plain brown craft paper for all of you gifts with a fancy fabric bow (or a thin twine rope if your style is more rustic).

You may want to have some empty boxes wrapped in designer wrapping paper under your Christmas tree to fill in the space until you get your Christmas gifts purchased and wrapped.

Nativity Scene
You can put your nativity scene underneath your Christmas tree.

If you have a larger nativity, consider putting it slightly in front of your Christmas tree.

To the Ground
If you do not plan on putting gifts under your Christmas tree, why not cut your Christmas tree to the ground so the limbs start just above the floor?

You should still have some sort of tree skirt underneath to catch fallen evergreen needles.
