How to Make Newspaper Garland

There are many different materials that you can use to make garland.

One material that you might already have at your home is newspaper.

Making garland out of newspaper is eco-friendly and a fun activity for the family.

Newspaper garland gives a vintage feel to your decor.

You can use the garland to decorate for parties as well as for Christmas decorating.

Here are the step by step instructions for how to make newspaper garland.

Decide where you want to use your garland so you know how long your newspaper garland needs to be.

You can hang it from the ceiling, drape it across a fireplace (not too close to the fire), use it to decorate a Christmas tree, drape it across a staircase handrail, hang it between the posts of a bed, or wherever you desire.

Paper
You can use any newspaper for your garland.

You can use the glossy ad pages for a more festive and colorful garland, or you can use plain black and white pages for a monochromatic look.

For a kid's party, consider using the comics.

You can even age your newspaper by putting it outside in the sun to fade the colors.

Another option is to paint the newspaper (either a solid color, a bold pattern, or a fun picture) before cutting it.

How to Make Your Own Newspaper Garland

Cutting
Cut the strips of paper into the size of your choice.

The garland shown was cut to 1-1/2" wide by 10" long.  Consider using pinking sheers #ad or other scissors with a decorative edge to cut the length of your newspaper strips.

To get the strips the same exact length, use a paper cutter #ad with a built in ruler.

Taping
Once your newspaper strips are cut, make a circle loop and tape the sections together using clear matte tape.

Create another loop, and string it through the first loop before taping it.

Put the 2 taped sides together and tape them together so the taped edges stay on the inside of the garland.

Keep working looping the sections together and taping pairs at their edges.
