Burlap is a very popular home decorating fabric these days, especially colored and printed burlap.
In order to get professional quality results when cutting burlap, you should know how to make a straight cut.
Here are the steps.
Measure
Measure from one end the length of the burlap that you want.
You should measure from one edge, not the center.
Make a tiny cut in the edge of the burlap at the appropriate dimension.
Remember to measure twice and cut once.
You can use a straight pin to mark the place of your cut.
Pull
Find one piece of burlap string running the width of the fabric that you want to cut.
Pull this string and remove it from your piece of fabric.
Your string may break, so be gentle.
The burlap will likely gather up, so spread it out as you go.
Cut
After the burlap string is removed, you should have a perfect line to follow in order to get a straight cut on your burlap.
Take your time while cutting to ensure that you stay in that area.
Finish Edge
After you have cut your burlap, you can finish your edge or leave it raw.
Consider finishing the edge with binding tape, folding it over and sew a hem, sewing just shy of the edge to keep the edge raw but keep it from unraveling more, or using hot glue to ensure it doesn't fray.
