Hard and Soft
Designers like to mix both hard and soft textures when decorating your home.
You can have a hard coffee table with a soft sofa, a hard wood floor with a soft rug on top, a hard bowl with soft balls of yarn, or soft drapes with a hard curtain rod.
Shiny and Dull
Designers also us both shiny and dull textures to add charm and character to a room.
Decorate using a shiny metal lamp with a dull fabric lamp shade, a shiny chrome chair with dull worn leather upholstery, a shiny ceramic sculpture on a dull wooden end table, or a shiny mirror with a dull wooden frame.
Rough and Smooth
Designers use a mixture of rough and smooth textures to create an interesting room.
