How to Decorate Using Artwork as the Focal Point

If you have a room in your home that seems boring and does not have any design direction, consider using a large piece of artwork as the focal point of your room.

That piece of artwork can be the "wow" feature of the room and can provide the color palette for the color scheme of your room.

Here are the steps for how to decorate a room using artwork as the focal point.

Oversized artwork to use as a room's focal point when decoratingLarge Art
When selecting art for a focal point of a room, the artwork must be large.

It has to be the first thing a person sees as they enter the room.

Do not decorate using a collection of multiple smaller pieces of art because they will look less expensive and create clutter.

You can select a painting, a framed poster, or a large sculpture.

For the best results, select artwork with many colors.

The subject matter of the art should be reflective of your style and personality.

Make sure to hang the artwork very carefully since large artwork that is not hung properly can fall and hurt someone.

You can select one oversized piece of art or you might want to use 2 or 3 large pieces of art in the same series that complement each other.

In order for your art to be the focal point of your room, make sure to put the large piece of artwork in a place of prominence in your home.

It can be hung over a mantle or over a sofa in your living room, over your entry table in your foyer, over a bed in your bedroom, or over a server or over a sideboard in your dining room.

Do not hide your focal point art in a narrow hallway where it is hard to view the entire piece of art at without moving your head back and forth.  Instead, put your focal point art at the end of a hallway for someone to view as they walk down the hallway.

Your large arwork will set the overall color scheme for your room.

Select colors from your artwork when selecting the accessories for your room.

You can decorate using throw pillows, figurines, a blanket, candles, a rug, hand towels, books, or other decorative items in the colors depicted in the artwork.

Usually, select at least 3 colors in your artwork to duplicate throughout your room in 3 different places in order to have a cohesive well designed color scheme.  For example, you might use a soft blue, a mauve pink, and a green to repeat throughout your room in at least 3 places.
