The Impact of Color on Mood: A Guide for Decorating Your Home

If you are redecorating your home, you may be interested in how colors affect your mood in order to create an appropriate mood for certain rooms. 

Here are some suggestions for appropriate colors for rooms in your home.

If you want your bathroom to be a tranquil and relaxing space, consider using the colors blue and/or green in that room. 

Blue is a relaxing color that reminds us of water and the sky. 

Green also reminds us of nature since it is the color of grass and trees.

White is a classic choice for a bathroom since it feels clean and crisp, however can feel very sterile if not paired with other accent colors.

Be careful of which colors you use near your mirror since those colors might reflect on your face making your skin tone look a bit weird.

Some people actually install pink light bulbs near mirrors in their home to give their skin tone a bit more color.

If you are not a morning person and do not enjoy waking up in the morning, consider painting your bedroom a light and bright buttery yellow color.  Yellow is cheerful, helps people stay awake, and helps put people in a happier mood.  

If you have trouble falling asleep, use the colors blue and/or green in your bedroom since they are relaxing colors.  Lavender is also another great option, however some might find it too feminine.

Most other dark colors should also help you fall asleep because it will help your body feel like it is night time.

Be careful of using too much blue in your home if you have issues with depresion because it might amplify that condition.

Use warm earth tone colors in your living room to create a warm and comfortable space that people want to spend time in.

If you want a more fun atmosphere in your living room, opt for bright and bold playful colors to set the mood.

A blue living room will help you relax at the end of the day, but might feel a bit cold and uninviting, especially if you opt for cool toned blues instead of warm toned blues.

Neutral colors are a "safe" option, but tend to be rather boring and don't showcase your personality.  Consider pairing a few calming colors with your neutral color palette to add a bit more interest to your neutral decor.

Many people want a dining room to be a place for people to be comfortable and want to stay for at least 30 minutes to an hour or more. 

If you are decorating your dining room, consider using the color red.  Red has been shown to make people feel hungry.  It is especially beneficial if you want your dining room to have a romantic mood since the color red can intensify feelings. 

Another good choice for a dining room is a warm yellow that will make your guests feel comfortable and cozy.

Most any earth tone in a dining room will make the room feel cozy and intimate.

You can also use red or yellow in your kitchen to help stimulate your appetite, but do so in moderation else you might always feel hungry.

Green reminds us of nature and freshness, like the freshness of our food, so it is also a great option for a kitchen.

White is the color of cleanliness, so it is also an excellent choice for a kitchen, however it can be a challenge to keep clean.  If using white as your main kitchen color, consider adding accent colors so it does not feel so sterile.

Earth tones are also a good choice since they feel authentic and grounded to the earth.  Pairing earth tones with white gives you a clean feel that does not feel so sterile.  Using high contrast neutral earth tones makes the space more interesting.

The color green has been shown to help people focus, so it would be an excellent color for a home office or study area.

Gray is a good choice for an office since it does not provide distraction to help you focus.  It also provides a simple video conference background that is not distracting, however is usually very uninspiring.

Decorating your home office in blue will help you stay calm at work, however can get a bit depressing if not paired with fun accent colors.  Pairing blue with a mixture of neutral colors will provide calmness yet keep you grounded and not be so depressing.

Craft Room or Play Room
If you want a color that will help put you in a creative mood, then select purple.  Purple can feel regal, luxurious, calming, and can enhance creativity.

Bold and bright colors are fun, especially when they are in high contrast.

You might want your craft room to be very basic white so that you can showcase your crafts and have them set the color scheme and mood of the room.

 

Powder Bathroom
If you want to add a little interest in your home but are afraid of making a big commitment, consider using the color orange in your powder room or another small room.  Orange demands attention but is also warm and welcoming. 

You can also use orange in small doses throughout your home to bring in some fun.
