Did you know that pool tables, also called billiard tables (and close cousins are the snooker table or English billiard table), come in different sizes.
The length of billiard tables are almost always twice the dimension of the width.
When selecting a pool table for your home, make sure to get the correct sized pool table for the space you have available.
Make sure the space around the billiard table is not obstructed by columns, walls, furniture, or other items that would get in the way of playing pool.
Not only is the billiard table size important, but also the size of the cue. Standard sized pool cues are 48", 52", and 58" (a 58" pool cue is standard).
There is not one standard sized pool table since different tournaments, leagues, and groups use different sizes.
Pool table heights typically vary from 29" to 31".
The simple way to determine the room size necessary for a pool table is to allow 5 foot of clearance on all sides of the pool table.
Mathematically, add 10 foot to each side of the pool table to account for 5 foot on each side.
So, a 4 foot by 8 foot pool table would need 14 foot by 18 foot of free space.
For a more precise measurement from pool table experts, see below.
7 Foot Pool Table Size
A 7 foot billiard table is 3'-6" x 7 with a playing area of 38" x 76".
If using a 48 inch cue, you need at least 11'-6" x 14'-6" clear space around the billiard table.
If using a 54 inch cue, you need at least 12' x 15' clear space around the billiard table.
If using a 58 inch cue, you need at least 13' x 16' clear space around the billiard table.
8 Foot Pool Table Size
An 8 foot table is 4' x 8' with a playing area of 44" x 88".
If using a 48 inch cue, you need at least 12' x 15'-6" clear space around the pool table.
If using a 54 inch cue, you need at least 12'-6" x 16' clear space around the pool table.
If using a 58 inch cue, you need at least 13'-6" x 17' clear space around the pool table.
Oversized 8 Foot Pool Table Size
An oversized 8 foot table is 4' x 8' with a playing area of 46" x 92".
If using a 48 inch cue, you need at least 12' x 16' clear space around the billiard table.
If using a 54 inch cue, you need at least 12'-6" x 16'-6" clear space around the billiard table.
If using a 58 inch cue, you need at least 13'-6" x 17'-6" clear space around the billiard table.
9 Foot Pool Table Size
A 9 foot table is 4'-6" x 9' with a playing area of 50" x 100".
If using a 48 inch cue, you need at least 12'-6" x 16'-6" clear space around the pool table.
If using a 54 inch cue, you need at least 13' x 17' clear space around the pool table.
If using a 58 inch cue, you need at least 14' x 18' clear space around the pool table.
Standard Snooker Table (Also Called English Billiards Table) Size
Snooker cues are 57 inches long
A Standard Snooker Table is 11'-8" x 5'-10", but is usually called a 12' x 6' table.
Allow for a minimum room size of 22' x 16'.
For a 10' x 5' table, allow 20' x 15'.
For a 9' x 4-6" table, allow 19' x 14'-6".
For an 8' x 4' table, allow 18' x 14'.
