How to Stay Ahead of Interior Design Trends

Interior design trends come and go about every 3 to 5 years.

If you are redecorating your home, you may want to look ahead to the next trends instead of decorating in the current trends that could go out of style at any minute.

Here are a few ways to stay ahead of interior design trends.

Know Your Location
Certain locations, such as Hong Kong and New York City, tend to have many trend setters.

If you live in suburbia (which is typically several years behind trendy city trends), look at what is currently on trend in these cities and decorate your home accordingly.

View as many images of contemporary homes in trendy areas and pick out consistent themes that you wish to incorporate into your home.

Look at Fashion
Trends are able to be produced faster in fashion than interior design items.

Look at what colors, patterns, fabrics, and styles are on trend in the fashion world and incorporate those into your home decor.

Timeless Decor
If you are not interested in constantly updating your home to be on trend, consider using timeless decor in your home.

Typically a traditional style is more timeless than contemporary or transitional styles.

Simple, natural, and clean are almost always in style.

Avoid new and flashy and go for tried and true.

You can also go with a vintage style, such as mid century modern, or an antique style from over 100 years ago.

Set Your Own Trends
Instead of copying other people and trying to keep up with the Joneses, why not set your own trends?

Be unique.

Be creative.

Do what makes you happy.

Use non-traditional colors.

Use one-of-a-kind items.

Avoid mass produced items from chain stores.

Make your home look like you - showcase your interests, travels, and heritage.
