How to Decorate an Opulent Bathroom

If minimalism is not your style, you might appreciate a more opulent aesthetic.

Opulent decorating is all about having many tiny details and being a bit over the top.

Whether your style is traditional or contemporary, here are a few ways to decorate your bathroom in a more lavish, extravagant, and opulent way.

Floors
Avoid man made flooring (ceramic or porcelain tile) and opt for natural materials.

Wood floors are pretty, however not always good near water.

If you want wood floors in your opulent bathroom, think about installing them with a special pattern or inlay.

Marble is one of the most luxurious flooring materials for a bathroom.

Consider using a specialty marble tile with an intricate pattern for more extravagance.

To add texture and warmth, you can also use a soft and fluffy rug or even a lavish patterned oriental rug.

Walls
Ditch your plain beige or gray painted walls and decorate your bathroom with lavish color.

You can use intricate wallpaper, a metallic paint finish, or a high gloss paint finish on your walls to make them more opulent.

If your budget allows, you can use large slabs of stone on your walls or completely cover them in wood.

Vanity
Many opulent bathrooms have freestanding vanities that look like furniture.

If you have a more contemporary style, you could have a high gloss vanity in a bold color.

Mirror
Get rid of your plain unframed mirror and replace it with a framed beveled mirror.

The mirror can be whatever style you want, as long as it has a lot of detail.

If you love mirrors, you can cover an entire wall, floor to ceiling, in a mirror.

Plumbing Fixtures
The faucets, tub fillers, and shower controls in an opulent bathroom should extra special.

Select plumbing fixtures with a unique shape, style, or color.

Sink
An opulent bathroom should have a show stopping sink.

Consider using a sink that is hand painted, clear glass lit from below, or metallic.

You might want to consider decorating your bathroom with a custom one-of-a-kind sink made by an artist.

Tub
Freestanding tubs are very opulent.

You can also select a whirlpool or air jet tub to relax in luxury.

Consider adding a decorative apron (the vertical part of the tub near the floor) to add some pizazz.

Shower
Frameless glass showers and shower rooms are the ultimate in luxury.

The bigger the better when it comes to showers.

You can even have multiple shower heads to massage as you shower.

When selecting your shower size, make sure to consider ways to keep the heat in your shower so you don't get too cold.

Light Fixtures
Have several light sources in your luxurious bathroom so you can change the lighting depending on your activity.

You can have a chandelier, a wall sconce, recessed can lights, and a lamp on the countertop.

Also consider using a dimmer switch so you can adjust the light in the room to your preference.

Make sure that all of your light bulbs are the same light temperature.  Light bulbs that have a higher number (such as 5000 K) give off a blue light while lights with a lower number (such as 2000 K) give off a yellow light.  Most people prefer lights around 2700-3200 K.

Ceiling
Don't forget about your ceiling when decorating your bathroom.

You can paint your ceiling a fun color (maybe a metallic), wallpaper the ceiling, put metal on the ceiling, or put wood on the ceiling.

Ceiling beams are also a nice addition to an opulent bathroom.

Accessories
Bathroom accessories send your opulent bathroom design over the top.

Make sure your soap dispenser, hand towels, and other item have lots of detail and are very special and unique.
