Small Space Decorating Mistakes

Decorating a small space is very different than decorating a large space.

Everything in a small space must be much more thoroughly evaluated since space is limited.

Here are some common decorating mistakes people make when decorating a small space and interior designer tips & tricks to fix them.

Clutter
Clutter is a problem for many people, but especially those in a small space.

A little clutter in a large space is messy, but a little clutter in a small space is overwhelming.

Create an organizational system when decorating your home so clutter does not accumulate.

Double Duty
Many people forget that items can serve multiple purposes in a small space.

You can get a sleeper sofa #ad, trundle bed, or Murphy bed #ad so you can have overnight guests without a dedicated guest room.

A built in bench or ottoman can be used as furniture as well as for storage.

Up High
Don't ignore the height of your small room!

Your cabinets and other storage pieces should be tall and maybe even go all the way to the ceiling to maximize your storage.

You should also hang your curtains very high to emphasize the height and volume of your room and make it feel larger.

Scale
Furniture manufacturers make large furniture to fill oversized homes as well as smaller pieces that fit smaller homes.

Make sure to get items for your home that are the appropriate scale.

If you are moving from a large suburban home to a small apartment downtown, you should consider selling your large furniture with your large house since it will most likely will be out of scale in your new apartment (and may not even be small enough to fit through the doors or up the stairs).

Most importantly, ensure that furniture you purchase not only fits your space, but is comfortable.

Don't fill your entire bedroom with a king sized bed with tiny bedside tables that are out of scale - either use a smaller bed or go without bedside tables.

Large furniture can fit in a small space as long as all of the furniture pieces are of the same scale.
