How to Make Your Rental Feel More Like Home

If you are renting an apartment or house, you probably don't want to invest much money on upgrading the apartment or house since it is not yours.

You probably have a very basic and boring rental.

Here are a few interior designer tips & tricks to make your rental feel more like home.

Paint
Many property owners will let you paint an accent wall in a room or two.

If your landlord is so kind, take advantage of this perk to personalize your rental home, just be prepared to paint it back before you leave.

Your landlord may even let you paint the entire space a neutral color or let you paint ugly cabinets.

Minor Improvements
You can make minor improvements to your rental home that are inexpensive, such as installing new cabinet hardware or adding a small wall hung cabinet.

You probably want to ask permission from your landlord first.

Lighting
You can replace the ugly boring light fixtures in your rental home with something fun and special.

Just make sure to keep the existing light fixture to put back when you move.

You can also install dimmer switches so you can adjust the light level in each room (just make sure to have a dimmable light bub).

If you cannot replace the light fixtures that are attached to your rental, at least get some amazing floor or table lamps to supplement the lighting.

Art
Art adds personality to a space and covers up all of those boring walls.

Consider using special adhesive wall hooks #ad that do not leave holes when removed for hanging items on the wall of your rental home.

Plants
Plants add life to a space, help purify the air, and make a rental feel more like home.

Consider getting some indoor trees or plants to fill vertical space.

Curtains
Curtains add softness to a window and make a rental feel less sterile.

They can also block out light and noise to aid in getting a good night's sleep.

You can even get curtain rods that do not make holes in the walls.

Rugs
Adding a rug to a room, even if it is on top of carpet, can add personality and softness to an otherwise boring space.

Rugs also reduce noise from within your rental and any neighbors living below you.

Mirrors
Many rental homes are small.  In order for it to feel a bit larger, add at least 1 mirror to each room.

You can use a wall mirror and/or mirrored furniture.

Mirrors bounce light around the room and give the appearance of more space.

Removable Wallpaper
Several companies sell temporary removable wallpaper #ad that you can hang in your rental home.

The temporary wallpaper can be removed and used in another space later.
