Brighten Your Bookcase with Colorful Classic Books

Many people are looking for easy ways to make their home more light, bright, cheerful, and happy.

One way to make a home feel more happy is to add more color.

If you have a bookcase in your living room, home office, bedroom, game room, or library, consider adding some colorful hardback books to brighten your bookcase.

Here are a few tips for selecting the best colorful books for your bookcase.

Subject
When investing in books for your home, try to not buy books just for decorative purposes.

Buy books that you or someone else in your household find interesting and might actually read.

If you are not an avid reader and just want to fill the space, a lesser expensive way to get colorful books is to purchase them from a yard sale, second hand book seller, or your local library.

Hardback/Hardcover Only
Do not display messy looking paper back books on your bookshelves.

Paper back books quickly look tattered and do not hold their shape.

Also, do not display 3 ring binders, accordion folders, or other purely utilitarian paper items on your bookshelves.

Only display hardback books with attractive spines.

Avoid displaying textbooks with a glossy spine that are not made to be attractive.

If you are an avid reader and have too many books, consider switching to ebooks so your books do not take over your house.  You can donate your lesser read books to a library or sell them in a yard sale, keeping the books that you love the most.

Remove the Jacket or Box
When selecting books for your bookcase, do not display the books in the paper jacket or box (unless they are very valuable collectibles).

The book's paper cover is often a completely different color than the hard cover, so make sure the hard cover is the color that you want.

If your book collection comes in a box, then discard the box and just display the books for a better aesthetic.

Book Color Depends on Bookcase Color
If you have a dark colored bookcase, then you will most likely want lighter colored books else darker books would disappear against the dark background.

If you have a light colored bookcase, then you will most likely want darker colored books to contrast against the light bookcase.

If your bookcase is dark, but the back wall of your bookcase is light, then you will most likely want darker colored books.

If your bookcases has an open back and your walls are painted dark, then you will most likely want lighter colored books to contrast against the dark wall color.

Look at the colors in your room when selecting book colors and try to repeat at least 3 of the colors already in your room.  For example, if you have a rug that has blue, yellow, and gray, then consider getting books in various shades of blue, yellow, and gray (you can add other colors also).

Book Organization
When putting books on your bookshelves, there is a trend to organize books by color (all reds together, all blues together, etc).

Organizing books by color is silly, so please organize your books by author, subject, or any other way to categorize by what is written instead of what the book looks like.

Classic Book Collections
If you want to display colorful books in your bookcase but don't know where to start, then consider investing in a hardcover classic book collection.

When thinking of which books are classics, you can refer to some of the books that you read in high school or others that were written many years ago but have been turned into movies.

Luckily, many classic books are available with different hardcover bindings so you can select a collection in colors that compliment your decor.
