Instead of using thin store bought garland, you can make your own fluffy and full garland out of whatever fabric you like.
Custom fabric garland looks especially good on a Christmas tree to add depth and fullness.
Here are the steps you can follow to create your own fabric garland.
Select Your Fabric
Select a fabric to coordinate with the color scheme and style of your Christmas tree.
A formal Christmas tree would have a more formal fabric and a casual Christmas tree will have a more casual fabric.
You can use the full width of fabric or you can cut the fabric into strips, however if you cut the fabric you may want to hem the edges so they do not fray (this is optional).
Consider using stiff burlap, a unique plaid, deco mesh, poly mesh, floral mesh, or fleece that does not fray.
You can even use several different types of fabric together to create a one of a kind look or use several different types of fabrics wrapped individually around your tree.
Other Materials
In addition to your fabric, you will also need a binding material such as rubber bands, twist ties, floral wire, pipe cleaners, or chenille sticks.
Since you are using the garland for decorating your Christmas tree, your binding material color is not very important because it will be tucked inside the Christmas tree where it won't be seen.
Create Your Garland
In order to create your garland, simply measure the width of your choice, typically around 12" but can be smaller or larger depending on your preference, and pull the two edges together to create a pouf.
For a more casual look, don't be too precise in your measurements and just guestimate the size.
Tie the ends together and keep creating poufs until you run out of fabric.
Install Your Garland
When installing your garland on a Christmas tree, tuck the tied ends into the tree and put the poufs on the outside.
Wrap the garland around your tree like a barber's pole starting from the bottom going up towards the top.
