How to Design a Purple Christmas Tablescape

When decorating for Christmas, many people opt for traditional red and green decor, however why not decorate for Christmas using the color purple to be a bit different, unexpected, and modern?

One of the places where people like to decorate for Christmas is the dining table, so a purple Christmas tablescape is an interesting twist on a traditional Christmas tablescape.

Here are a few tips and tricks for how to design a purple Christmas tablescape in your home.

There are many shades of purple to choose from, so make sure you decide which color or colors of purple that you want to use for your Christmas tablescape.

You might prefer deep purples, like plum and aubergine, or lighter shades, such as lilac and lavender.

When selecting the right purple for your Christmas tablescape, make sure to consider the shade of purple found in your other Christmas decor as well as the colors in your dining room.

Different manufacturers might call the same color of purple by different names, so make sure to bring your favorite purple to the store to color match instead of buying something by the color name.

Keep in mind that you do not have to use just one shade of purple - you can use several different shades for a more interesting design.

In addition to purple, consider whether you want to also add other neutral colors and/or metallic colors.

Consider incorporating neutral colors like white, gray, black, ivory, and/or beige.

Also consider adding metallic accents for extra sparkle, such as silver, gold, copper, or antique brass items.  Consider spray painting some of your existing Christmas decor with metallic spray paint or covering them with glitter.

Another option to add sparkle is to use mirrored items, such as mirrored candle holders or a mirror table runner.  For a modern look, select new mirror.  For a traditional eclectic look, consider using antiqued mirror.  Mercury glass accents are also a nice touch.

When building your purple Christmas tablescape, begin with the foundation of your tablescape – the table linens.

Choose a tablecloth or a table runner in shades of purple or one of your neutral or metallic colors that will set the stage for your theme.

You might even want to stack linens on top of each other for a unique twist.  You could use one color of tablecloth on the bottom and a smaller different colored tablecloth (or different pattern) on top for variety.

Consider linens with a pattern (such as a tartan) or a texture (such as velvet or burlap) for more interest.

Your centerpiece is the focal point of your purple Christmas tablescape, so select it with care.

You can use purple flowers, Christmas ornaments, natural elements, fruit, candles, or whatever you want to add.

Make sure to use a mix of textures and heights to add dimension.

Also add elements like pinecones or evergreen branches to bring a touch of Christmas to the design.

Spray painting small branches gold or glittering pinecones is a popular tablescape design choice.

When using candles in a tablescape, make sure that they are unscented so that the fragrance does not interfere with the food aroma.  Also, use candlesticks of varying heights for a more interesting effect. Instead of candles, you might choose to use battery powered string lights.  If you go this route, make sure to view the lights during the time of day when you will be having dinner both with the overhead lights on and off to ensure that the string lights create the ambience that you desire.

For a special touch, add antique or vintage items, such as antique candlesticks, vintage Christmas ornaments, or vintage picture frames with photos of family.

Select dinnerware that complements your purple color scheme.

You can use your classic white china with a gold or silver edge to let your purple decor take center stage.

Consider adding a patterned or metallic charger for an added layer of visual interest.  Bamboo, rattan, and wicker chargers are a favorite for adding texture to the dinner table.

For a designer look, give everyone the exact same place setting, however mix and match different dinnerware sets to be unique and one-of-a-kind.  For example, your dinner plate can be white with a metallic border, your salad plate can be purple, and your smaller accent plate can be a unique Christmas plate that has a bit of purple in it.

Don't forget to incorporate your color scheme into your glassware and utensils.

Consider purchasing a few pieces of purple-tinted glassware for extra purple sparkle.

Your utensils will most likely not be purple, but they should complement the other metallic elements in your design.

You probably do not want to incorporate more than 2 different metal colors in your Christmas tablescape so the color scheme feels cohesive, so make sure to incorporate the color of your utensils into your Christmas tablescape design.

For a little extra formality during the Christmas holidays, consider using cloth napkins that are either purple or one of the neutral or metallic colors of your color scheme.  Also give extra thought to whether you want to use napkin rings, which offer another opportunity to add more purple to your Christmas tablescape.

Another way to add a finishing touch to your tablescape is by using personalized place cards, which add a thoughtful touch.

Some people like to add a little Christmas trinket to the top of each plate.

Consider adding small touches like purple ribbon tied around the cutlery or a sprig of evergreen on each plate.

Another fun addition to a Christmas tablescape is Christmas crackers that match the color scheme. Fill them with small treats or trinkets for a festive and interactive element that adds a touch of fun to the dining experience.
